Managing eLearning Day 2

Friday morning, sitting at the same place at the same table, same as everyone else. I wonder why we do this. I thought about sitting somewhere else and then decided that I might be ousting someone from the place they were comfortable. After all, that is where they chose to sit.

Yesterday after the session, Nigel did a five minute interview to webcam about eLearning for me. It was great to have a webcam right there. I was too worn out to get it up here right away but all being well I'll have it here later today.

Nigel is talking about the importance of getting the right governance model in place. He says that if this isn't right, it will dog your footsteps forever.

Managing eLearning

Nigel Paine This is a heap of fun! I'm sitting in a session about eLearning management lead by Nigel Paine. He used to be the Chief Learning Officer at the BBC. It is gooooood! This guy knows a real lot about this business. There are about 40 of us here, from industty and education.

He's just talking now about how important it is to have those coffees with the head of ICT. Uh ... hmm. Craig - you feel like a coffee?

Branding in a way that people relate to helps. BBC called their eLearning portal 'Gateway'. This certainly creates a positive impression of what you will get if you go that way.

Another strategy he has used is to 'hide' little rewards in the materials, such as DVDs and book vouchers. He said that people FLOCKED to do them.

He also got people like the CEO to do courses and then write an email to everyone saying that he had done it, and that he hoped the 40% of people who hadn't done it already would do so soon. This got results! I like this idea. I wonder if Joe would do an intro to VC3 course? Or join in Facilitate eLearning? This would be great!

E-learning Innovations Workshop

Ken, Kane and Fletch at the workshop - clearly taking it hard.
I'm sitting in the Oaks on Market with a bunch of about 50 folks from different TAFEs and community providers and universities and even a couple of private providers. The team from eWorks are doing a fantastic job of getting us all in the picture about these projects.
Ken, Kane and Fletch picked me up from my place yesterday, and along with Lori, Kane's friend and our SmartBoard expert from Woolsthorpe Primary School, we loped across country and found ourselves in the big smoke not long after dundown. A pleasant dinner at a South Bank restaurant, and it was back to the Oaks for ... an early night? A bottle of scotch and a big fat cigar? Nooooo....! Fletch and I settled down to a heavy session of getting me up to speed on roofing calculations!

The sessions so far have been very useful. Clint, Howard and Ken have all given very useful presentations - noticably using linked Word documents instead of Powerpoints for some of the content. We got a bunch of brochures and a CD at the start.
